The three winners of the Turku Lab, Veli-Matti Karhulahti, Vilja Siitonen and Eric Malmi represented Finland – the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi – at the international Finale in Berlin, 8 of November 2014. A total of 98 presentations were presented during one intensive day. Three candidates representing Finland in the Berlin Lab Finale on November 2015 were Eric Malmi (Aalto University), Veli-Matti Karhulahti (University of Turku) and Vilja Siitonen (University of Turku). Eric Malmi presented his work ”Breaking the Wall of Family Trees” on computational methods that automatically reconstruct and analyze family trees. These methods have a new approach on the processes of data gathering and managing. Veli-Matti Karhulahti was awarded for his research on the meaning of the concept of ”game”, titled ”Breaking the Wall of Videogames as Games”. His theoretical approach provides multitude of adaptation possibilities to research as well as game industry. Vilja Siitonen impressed the jury with her work ”Breaking the Wall Between Serious Diseases and Us”. Her work focuses on the post-antibiotic era and provides a solution for antibiotic resistance.
